I Want a New Drug!

If you’re as old as me and you remember this song by Huey Lewis and the News, you remember that what he was looking for was a drug that made him feel like he felt when he was alone with his girlfriend.
That brought to mind the thought that when we are focused on ourselves, we are always looking for the next high from that which we are the most addicted to. It may be something that is sinful, or may not be sinful, when looking at each one by itself. The list is endless and can include sports, work, nature, video games, music, movies, money, gossip, shopping, sex, drugs, pornography, success, praise, power, and sometimes even our kids or spouse. However, the thing or things that we can point to that dominate our thoughts and desires are those which we value most. The drug we are addicted to becomes the idol that GOD commanded us not to put before HIM and separates us from a relationship with HIM and truth. If we are addicted, all we care about is the next high and we avoid anything that interferes with obtaining it.
Satan is a master at knowing which of these things we are addicted to. He will architect the environment that is necessary to get us addicted and keep us in that addiction with the ultimate goal of destroying us and GOD’s plan. That environment can even include success & prosperity which can feed our pride making us believe we do not need a GOD or somehow GOD has blessed us because we are “better” than others.
While some of these things are more difficult to break free from and may include the need for Christian counseling, etc., all require the desire and decision by the individual to break free and seek the forgiveness and help of almighty GOD made available by HIS son Jesus Christ who was convicted and executed in our place for our crimes (sin) against the kingdom and law of GOD. That decision includes seeking HIM and the Word of GOD which instructs us on what it is we need to do. The apostle Paul tells us that the focus of our thoughts must change from the things of the flesh to the things of GOD which are spiritual. Those things can only be understood by us when give our lives to Jesus and He sends us the Holy Spirit who dwells with our spirit and becomes our helper.

I want a new drug, the ultimate high, the Holy Spirit of GOD!

Rom 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
Rom 8:7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
Rom 8:8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Rom 8:10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Rom 8:12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Rom 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Rom 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Rom 8:16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Rom 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Rom 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
